China rarely springs to mind when discussing beach holiday locations, but in recent years the region of Sanya, which lies on the coast of China’s southern Hainan Province, has risen to prominence as a dedicated holiday resort which can easily rival anything else found on the international tourist circuit.

Sanya’s forty kilometres of coastline provide a host of different beaches upon which visitors can relax and soak up the sun, swim, snorkel or enjoy the activities and facilities on offer. Palm-fringed and popular, Sanya Bay is backed by the modern and vibrant city of Sanya itself. Picturesque Dadonghai Bay, a little way to the southeast, is lively yet laid-back and is renowned for its wide selection of bars and restaurants which cater for every budget and taste. Further east, Yalong Bay is a truly beautiful resort with a clean, award-winning white sand beach, clear waters and a collection of quality hotels, restaurants and retail outlets.

In addition to its outstanding beaches, the Sanya region also boasts every kind of entertainment, cultural and recreational activity a modern holidaymaker could wish for, including golf courses, a theme park, an aquatic zoo, museums and nature reserves.

Sanya Travel Guide – When to visit

Sanya enjoys a tropical climate which offers continuous sunshine and warmth almost all year round. The weather is at its most temperate between October and March when days are warm and rainfall is rare. The heat and humidity rises between April and June and although Sanya’s coastal location ensures cooler weather than inland China, daily temperatures  average 29°C (84°F) and can go higher. The heat persists between July and September but is more likely to be accompanied by tropical showers and there is an isolated risk of minor typhoons (usually lasting no more than three days).

Sanya’s cuisine

The waters off the south coast of China’s Hainan Province are clean and pollution-free, creating the perfect environment for an abundance of shellfish and seafood, and as such this informs much of Sanya’s gastronomy. However, as a thoroughly twenty-first century and cosmopolitan holiday resort region, Sanya benefits from a vast choice of restaurants which specialise not only in superb local and regional Chinese cuisine but also offer every style of international cuisine from steaks to sushi.

A stay in Sanya rounds off the best possible China holiday experience

Since the Millennium, China has swiftly risen to take its place among the world’s ten most desireable visitor destinations. China’s combination of ancient history and culture, exhilarating cities, natural beauty and sublime cuisine is capturing the hearts of increasing numbers of visitors.
