China’s Visa-free Cities offer 72-hour Stays

As a result of changes in the rules governing entry to China by foreign nationals, a number of Chinese cities now offer travellers the opportunity to stay for a maximum of 72 hours without requiring an entry visa.

Historically, it has been necessary for all visitors to mainland China and Hainan Island to obtain an entry visa to the country prior to their arrival, although this is not necessary for visiting Hong Kong or Macau. However, in 2013 the Chinese cities of Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Chengdu relaxed the rules to enable visitors to enjoy a stay not exceeding 72 hours without the need to obtain a China entry visa. In January 2014 Shenyang and Dalian joined the list of participating cities.

The rules governing 72-hour visa-free visits to China

To benefit from a visa-free stay in China, visitors must hold a valid passport for one of the following countries:

Argentina, Austria, Australia, Belgium, Brazil, Brunei, Bulgaria, Canada, Chile, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand, Poland, Portugal, Qatar, Romania, Russia, Singapore, Slovakia, Slovenia, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, United Arab Emirates, Ukraine, United Kingdom, United States.

A visa-free stay in China applies only to visitors that are arriving in, and departing from, China by air.

Visitors must hold a valid visa for a forward destination, and this cannot be the same as the country from the visitor arrived; in other words, a round trip from the UK to China and back to the UK would not be permissible.

Visitors must leave China via the same airport at which they arrived.
