Zhengzhou

Zhengzhou is the capital and largest city of Henan Province in northeast China. With an ever growing population of more than 8 million, Zhengzhou is one of China’s newest mega-cities and has experienced rapid development in the last 15 years. Despite its modern appearance, Zhengzhou also has a tremendously rich history which provides it with some exquisite attractions.

The most well-known attraction in the city is the ‘Shaolin Monastery’, perhaps the finest example of a Mahayana Buddhist monastery in China. The monastery, which was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2010, also has a long association with martial arts and serves as an important school of Kung Fu. With its rich history, it is no surprise that Zhengzhou houses a world-class museum; the Henan Museum has hundreds of thousands of exhibits.

Zhengzhou enjoys high temperatures from April right through until October; however these months can be stiflingly hot with high humidity. A better time to visit is the autumn, after the monsoon season, when the weather is usually drier and less humid.
