Hohhot

Hohhot in northern China is the capital city of the Inner Mongolia province. Although a part of China, the province has a quasi-autonomous form of government. Nicknamed ‘The Blue City’ and considered the dairy capital of China, you could be forgiven for thinking that Hohhot is a small rural town. However, the city has undergone rapid and widespread development in the last 15 years and is now home to almost 3 million people.

The best time to visit Hohhot is during the spring, when the warming temperatures bring the city’s green heart to life. This time of year is perfect for exploring the plateaus and grasslands surrounding the city, much of which is little changed, despite the rapid development.

With little under 3 million in population, it is surprising that Hohhot is actually one of China’s smaller cities. It is because of its size that the city has been able to preserve its unique Mongolian culture which creates a warm and welcoming atmosphere for visitors.
